Free baby sleep help in Australia, state by state, and when a sleep consultant is worth paying for

Updated 25 October 2026 · 2 minute read · General information, not medical advice

Short answer: Start with your child health nurse, who is free and can refer you to residential programs like Tresillian, Karitane, Ngala or the Ellen Barron Family Centre. National lines include Pregnancy, Birth and Baby on 1800 882 436 and the Red Nose Safe Sleep Advice Line on 1300 998 698. A private sleep consultant can help when you want a plan for your child, quicker, and someone checking in while it settles.

Before you spend money, it's worth knowing how much good help in Australia is free. These numbers were checked on 25 October 2026 [1][2].

Child and family health nurses (maternal and child health nurses in Victoria) are the usual first step, and they can refer you to residential services [3]. In Queensland, child health nurses can now request a referral to the Ellen Barron Family Centre for free virtual or residential help with sleep, feeding and behaviour [4].

Look after yourself too

In one Melbourne study, two-thirds of mothers with significant depression symptoms also reported a baby sleep problem [5]. If you've felt low, anxious or not yourself for a while, call PANDA or see your GP.

When a private consultant is worth it

Free services are good, but they can mean waiting lists and general advice. People usually pay a sleep consultant when they want:

  • a plan written for their child, their home and how they want to settle;
  • someone who'll come to the house, or meet by video at a time that suits;
  • daily or weekly check-ins while things change;
  • help soon, rather than in a few weeks.

Prices, qualifications and approach differ a lot. Each listing on this site shows how the consultant settles, the ages they see and their published prices where they've shared them. You can compare up to three side by side, and our ranking method is published in full.
